I spent a few minutes today weeding Gary’s garden and planting seeds for the fall where I had little spaces to squeeze them in. I prefer to plant intensively and not leave open spaces for weeds to grow. Still, I will be fighting weeds in this garden for a while because there are bindweeds and crab grass and other highly invasive plants that were pretty established when I got here. But it wasn’t too terribly bad today where I had already weeded previously and planted thickly. It’s where I spaced things out generously that I had more weed issues, which is a perfect example of why intensively planting is a good idea. It gives LESS room to the weeds. It got hot very quickly once the sun was fully out so I watered the seeds I did get planted and didn’t do all the weeding and planting I had thought I would do.
I planted two types of short carrots, radish, beets, peas, cilantro, and bak choi. I tried to plant things that took only 50-60 days to harvest since we are a short growing season here. I am keeping written records of when and what I plant, so that I can learn in this new location the best times and varieties for growing here and the best times to plant them. each year, the records can be tweaked until I have the best way of doing things. It also helps to try to find the patterns here, although the patterns have become so messed up due to the climate change. What does well here I will try to save seeds from for future plantings to get acclimated to this location. Something we ALL should be doing if you plan to bug-in where you are. You don’t want to get somewhere and not know how to grow in your conditions. That’s a bad idea.
