Sun out, frost in.

That’s the way of winter here. If it’s clear, you get the cold mornings. The frosts. Not Midwest or mountain cold, but you’ll get ice on the windshield and frozen water buckets, which usually thaws by afternoon. Clouds usually moderate the winter temperature here. Which is another reason I chose this area. I’ve lived in brutal cold and snow. Not my thing. Especially as I get older. The idea of shoveling massive piles of snow, and trudging through it, is not something I want to be doing. Too much cold is as dangerous as too much heat. Sure, you can fight more effectively against cold. Wood fires, heaters, warm clothes, shelter and lots of calories from food for the inner furnace. But what happens if there is so much snow your shelter collapsed? Or nobody can get to the store to restock on food and fuel? The power goes out from ice on the lines. The scenarios are numerous. They can be prepped for of course but I’d still rather not have to deal with the potential issues of far too harsh a winter.

I chose a spot I could garden and harvest year long if I wanted to.

A spot that won’t get feet of snow to make life difficult.

Where we won’t deep freeze into dangerous temperatures for human life.

In any case, the morning temps have me thinking about how to survive winters if the power goes out. I can’t afford a solar system yet. And my little trailer doesn’t have space for a wood stove. I do have a little buddy heater for propane if need be. For now that’s the best I can do. But it is a concern as I have little to no insulation on my tiny trailer home.
