This is the worst harvest of onions I have ever had. Could be a few reasons for this but the soil I know was good. I have always grown whoppers and prize winners so these little sad things are disappointing. At least I don’t eat onions. My friends do. They can still eat these small ones.

On further reading on what may have gone wrong, it appears that onions don’t like to be planted near peas and beans. They were next to peas in the same bed. All my other perimeters were what I normally do as far as onion growing.
I will not grow them in the same raised bed next year. In fact I probably won’t grow peas in raised beds anyway. At least not the vining types. I will make SURE to label these as vining next this time so I will remember they are not the short kind.

I pulled the not so great looking pea vines as well. I picked what was left- the dry will be saved for seeds. The not dry will be duck and chicken snacks at this point. The vines went into the new compost pile.

I then added a little bit of fresh soil, and hand raked the bed removing any of the few roots that had taken root (I’m learning to enjoy the practically weed free raised bed gardening!) and put down some seeds.
I’m not a fan of radish and won’t eat it but I’ll grow it since I have the seeds and give them to others to enjoy. But I definitely want to eat the lettuce. I love fresh lettuce and it’s safer to eat than the store bought lettuce. We are in for a nice cool stretch of weather, but should it happen to get hot, I will throw the shade cloth over.

Below are some general pictures of how things are going around the compound.
