It’s 7:20 am. Still mostly dark out for a few more minutes and I’m sitting here thinking about seeds and bacon. I’m considering what to make for breakfast. Should I open that package of turkey bacon this morning? Still undecided about that. Breakfast means I have to start the day and actually start doing stuff and I’m not sure I’m ready for that even if Rocky is doodle-doing his fat feathered heart out in the chicken coop.
But I’m also thinking about seeds. Seeds are a tiny bit of an obsession for me. They always have been. From all the different shapes, sizes, and colors of seeds, to the fascinating plants they seem to magically turn into. Seeds hold the secrets of life. They are tiny little potentials.
You can break down a seed into its little bits and parts to see how they work but you take any of those parts away and they don’t grow. They don’t become a living thing. It’s fascinating.
Seeds are potential. They are medicinal, food, and job security. Without seeds there is nothing.
Seeds being people together. Not only for survival but as a means of social interaction. Even in modern times we meet friends to trade seeds. Seeds we may have collected from our gardens or other sources.
Seeds can help us create income. Grow some spare plants from those seeds. Plant what seedlings you need for your own garden and sell or trade off the extra plants to cover costs of seed, soil, and time. I used to do that at the farm. I plan to start doing that again.
So I have started to inventory my seeds. And that’s why they are on my mind this morning. An inventory done via spreadsheet helps me to see what seeds I need to grow out to keep the collection fresh and healthy. It lets me see what I’m low on and what I need to trade or purchase. It helps me plan for the next year’s garden.
